Black Ase 2022
First art piece by the Black Burner Project
Black! Ase (2022)
Imagine for the 1st time ever, a 30ft image of a person of color on the Playa. We use the size as a beacon to attract citizens to explore further. The scale is important to create this monumental impact.
Those willing to further engage can partake in a journey of self.
The first large-scale photographic installation by the Black Burner Project. Each of the prints intentionally chosen will act as walls to create an internal pathway and climbable levels. The structures' positioning for events creates a gathering space during the week. We see the project as shifting the paradigm of art experienced on playa by creating a space for residents to engage in the experiences of others. We are designing this space for maximum participation by playing with space, size, sound & sight. This is where burners of color can see themselves and know they are home.
The large-scale portraits of Black Burners stand tall on playa and mark their historical place (past present and future). They are meant to not only be seen but touched, heard, documented, and remembered.
