Our Large Scale Art Piece for Burning Man 2022

Mission

Black Burner Project has a mission of transforming communities through creation of radical diversity, art and awareness of the uniqueness of Black and Brown burners. In alignment to BMP’s mission, we see the project as shifting the paradigm of art experienced on playa by creating a space for residents to engage around the experiences of others. We are designing this space for maximum participation by captivating the senses. This is where burners of color can see themselves and know they are home.

What is “Behold - From the Dust”?

For five years Black Burner Project has made a significant impact primarily through photography & verbal storytelling. Our aim for BM22 is to present our vision through an interactive & immersive photographic installation mapped across three sculptures, each offering a unique experience. A 12’ interstitial pathway will be carved from the scaffolding of each sculpture to allow for three inclosed individual experiences. The 3 sculptures will be arranged in a triangle, allowing the paths to flow into each other.
  • Portrait of Ken - Silenced: Light. An experience of overwhelm, uncomfort. Violet hues diffuse through hanging sheets.
  • Portrait of Steve - Evolution: Audio & visual. Audio storytelling & Photographs.
  • Portrait of Anisette - Celebration & Reflection: An experience of coming into self power, reflecting on the journey.
